OpenAI Lands in India: New Delhi Gets Its First Office!
Artificial Intelligence is no longer just the “future”—it’s shaping our present. And now, India is set to play an even bigger role in this global AI journey. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has announced that it will open its first-ever India office in New Delhi later this year.
This move isn’t just about expansion—it’s about recognition. India has emerged as ChatGPT’s second-largest market after the United States and one of the fastest-growing globally. According to OpenAI, the number of active users in India has surged more than fourfold in the last year. From curious students to budding developers, entrepreneurs, and tech leaders, India’s love for AI has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, summed it up beautifully: “India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader – amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission.”
And he’s right. India isn’t just consuming AI—it’s building it. The country is already among the top five developer markets for OpenAI and boasts the largest student user base worldwide. By setting up a physical office and hiring local talent, OpenAI is making a long-term commitment to co-create solutions tailored for India.
The New Delhi office will serve as more than just a workspace. Its focus will be to:
- Strengthen relationships with government, businesses, academia, and developers.
- Hire Indian talent for roles in enterprise, sales, and strategic partnerships.
- Build AI for India, and with India, by tailoring products to local needs.
- ChatGPT Go – a budget-friendly subscription plan at just ₹399/month with UPI payments.
- OpenAI Academy – in partnership with the IT Ministry, to train and upskill talent.
- Indic Language Support in GPT-5 – making AI accessible in more Indian languages.
